Camp i-Sci Summer 2014 Themes

June 2nd-6th: Out the door, let’s EXPLORE!

Hop, crawl, or swim your way to the Imaginarium Science Center for this exciting camp.  Let’s get out the door and EXPLORE the wild and green things that live around us and investigate the mysteries of nature while learning about our local environment.  EXPLORE the natural wonders of the outdoors through various fun and engaging activities.  Dare to adventure and see what fun nature exploration can be.  This camp includes a field trip to an estuary on Pine Island for wading and netting through the mudflats to explore and observe marine organisms.

June 9th-13th: Chemistry—Kitchen to KABOOM!

Combine a pinch of science and a dash of fun to concoct some super substances!  Conduct fun experiments using normal, everyday kitchen ingredients….some of which you can actually eat.  Measure and mix ingredients to get the right combination of some cool colloidal chemistry, conduct explosive experiments, and explore rockin’ reactions as you learn to control the amazing power of chemistry!

June 16th-20th: May the Force be With You: Phunky Physics

Physics has never looked so cool!  Experiment with energy, forces and interaction as you learn about motion and matter. Investigate electricity and magnets, and meet some cool dudes named Newton, Bohr and Einstein!  Explore simple machines by trying your hand at a pulley and make a pop with air pressure!  For this camp there is only one thing to say; may the force be with you.

June 23rd-27th: NanoScience: Zoom into Nano!

A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter…that’s tiny!  Grab your magnifying glass-it’s time to get nano!  Discover the science of small and see how we are creating new technologies that are used at the nanoscale. Learn how making observations at the nanoscale can help us understand things like self-cleaning plants, sand that can clean up oil spills, and clothes that can’t get dirty! We bet your mom will want to sign you up after hearing that last one!

June 30th-July 3rd: Grossology: Science of Strange

Yuck!  Get ready to get gross at camp as we discuss the disgusting!  Are snakes slimy?  What is owl puke?  How does your nose make so much snot??  You’ll find the answers to those questions and gain much more revolting knowledge because this week is all about uncovering all that is unpleasant. Be prepared to get weird as you learn all about the science of the bizarre!

July 7th-11th: Engineer It!

Join the Imaginarium in exploring the exciting world of engineering!  Experiment with architecture, inventing, and the engineering design process.  Create super structures, towers, bridges, and more.  Learn what it takes to be an inventor and even make your own inventions! Then, use materials to build on your new foundation of knowledge as you try your hand at designing and engineering your own creations.

July 14th-17th: Radical Robotics!

We know how to spark an interest in technology – explore electricity, but don’t short circuit as you explore the science behind robotics and build your own radical robot to take home!  You will need to be in high-performance mode to meet our robotics challenge, as you tinker with technology to build your own mechanical masterpiece to take home!

July 21st-25th: Insect Investigations!

It’s creepy crawly week at the Imaginarium! Join us in an investigation into the insect world as we figure out what bugs are all about.  Get a bug’s eye view as you discover what it’s like to live, see, and even eat as an insect.  Study all about these six-legged creatures and maybe even meet a few arachnids along the way!

July 28th-August 1st: Crime Time: i-Sci Investigators

Do you think you have what it takes to be a CSI agent?  Pick up your magnifying glass and join the Imaginarium detectives to collect clues and use your scientific savvy to solve some super science mysteries.  With a little help from forensic science, i-Sci Investigators can trace the scientific facts to crack some cryptic cases.

August 4th-8th: Tech Talk: Explorations into Technology

Technology is EVERYWHERE!  It is your smartphone, your house, a pencil; almost anything made by humans that solves a problem!  Join the Imaginarium in exploring some recent advances in technology through programming, circuitry, and electronics.  Leave a tech wizard as you think creatively to program an interactive story and even light up some LEDs!

August 11th-15th: Rocket to the Stars

Come get star-struck at the Imaginarium Science Center!  Join us in an exploration of the stars – above and beyond the Earth’s surface in an out-of-this-world travel through vastly unexplored galaxies.  Hold on tight as we launch into space to investigate the eight identified planets (poor Pluto) and star-gaze the constellations.  It is sure to be an EPIC adventure!  This camp includes a field trip to the Calusa Nature Center Planetarium.
